Bookstore
Policies
Policy 1 - Textbook Department
Undergraduate
Textbooks - The University Bookstore provides a rental system to
full-time undergraduate students for all hardback textbooks. The book
rental is included in tuition and fees and entitles students to receive
all required hardback textbooks. Exceptions: Warren Wilson students and
foreign exchange students are exceptions. Their fees are waived by
agreement between their institutions and Appalachian State University.
These students must present appropriate verification to receive
textbooks from the Bookstore.
State Employees -
Full-time State employees taking a tuition-free course are entitled to
use the accompanying rental textbook. The textbook is rented free of
charge for the term of the course. The signed and approved tuition-free
authorization form must be presented to personnel in the Textbook
Department in order to receive the book.
Books Must
be Returned - All rental books from the previous semester must be
returned within the times specified by the Bookstore. Adherence to this
policy will avoid book charges being added to the student's account.
The policy for the timely return of books is absolutely necessary to
insure an adequate supply of books for the current semester. The
academic departments normally adopt textbooks for a three year period.
The concept of the rental system depends on a smooth turnover of books
from semester to semester.
Management Approval -
Students may not keep rental books beyond the prescribed times except
with prior approval and knowledge of the Bookstore management.
Management will make a reasonable effort to accommodate students who
have valid reasons for keeping books past the prescribed return
deadlines - provided prior arrangements have been made. Discounts are
allowed for books that are purchased.
The return policy deadlines will be posted at the Bookstore.
Graduate
Students, etc. - All graduate, summer school, part-time (less than 8
hours) students, and student teachers must purchase their textbooks.
These students are not charged a rental fee.
Location
- The Textbook department is located on the fifth floor of the
Bookstore and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. during the first
two weeks of a new semester and during the week of final exams.
Extended hours are provided during the first week of each semester.
Other adjustments in the schedule are posted at the department. Call
the University Bookstore at 262-3070 if you have questions concerning
the Textbook department.
Policy 2 - Merchandise Department
Available
Merchandise - The Bookstore's Merchandise department offers a wide
variety of study, office and personal supplies. The products and
services offered include school supplies, art and engineering supplies,
stationery, greeting cards, novelties and gifts, toiletries, snacks,
class rings, caps and gowns, and photo services.
The
Merchandise department is located on the third floor of the Bookstore
and is open during the Bookstore's normal operating hours.
Policy 3 - Paperback Department
The
Paperback department carries all required paperbacks and paperbacks
recommended by course instructors. The required paperbacks are arranged
by subject, course number, and instructor. The paperbacks that are
recommended are grouped by subject area.
The
Paperback department features a scholarly general reading area and also
offers best sellers, children's books, bulletin board items, college
outlines, study notes, dictionaries, and special interest books. The
Paperback department will assist anyone needing to special order any
book.
All paperbacks must be purchased even though
some are required reading. Paperback books are not included in the
rental program.
At the end of each semester the
Paperback department has a special buyback period. Paperbacks that are
required reading and are used from one semester to another are bought
back for 50% of the purchase price. The books must be in good condition
with no torn covers or pages. The Paperback department will post a list
of the books that will be bought back and the scheduled buyback days.
The
Paperback department is located on the first floor of the University
Bookstore and is open during the Bookstore's normal operating hours.
Policy 4 - Sporting Goods Department
The
Sporting Goods department carries a wide variety of recreational,
leisure, and seasonal sportswear for children and adults. Many items
have the Appalachian logo, seal or Yosef logo printed or embroidered on
them. The Sporting Goods department also carries small sports
accessories.
In addition to sportswear, the Sporting
Goods department carries many gift items also imprinted with the
Appalachian State University seal or logo. These items include mugs,
cups, glasses, plaques, jewelry, fraternity and sorority items.
The
Sporting Goods department is located on the fourth floor of the
University Bookstore and is open during the Bookstore's normal
operating hours.
Policy 5 - Returned Checks
Every effort will be made to collect checks that have been returned by the bank to the Bookstore for whatever reason.
After
the check has been returned it will be redeposited a second time unless
the account is closed or a stop payment has been placed on the check. A
notice will be sent to the individual advising her/him to make
arrangements with the bank for the check to clear.
Less
than $25.00 - If the check is returned a second time, the payor is a
University employee or student, and the amount of the check is less
than $25.00, the charge will be placed on Accounts Receivable in the
Controller's Office.
More than $25.00 - If the
check is returned a second time and the amount is $25.00 or more, the
Bookstore will send a certified letter advising the payor the check has
been returned a second time. Furthermore, payment should be made within
seven (7) days or the charge will be transferred to the Controller's
Office and withheld from a subsequent payroll.
Students not Employed by Appalachian State University
If
a check has been returned from the bank a second time and the person is
not a University employee, a certified letter will be sent to the
University Post Office Box and a first class letter will be sent to the
home address. The student will have 15 days from the mailing date to
clear the check and avoid legal action. If after 15 days the student
has not cleared the check, a warrant will be issued.
Payment
will not be accepted by the Bookstore after a warrant has been issued.
The account must be cleared with the Magistrate or the Clerk of Court
of Watauga County.
Policy 6 - Desk Copies
In
order to provide students with the most current economical textbooks,
the Bookstore has a three year adoption policy for textbooks.
Whenever
instructors or departments determine that a new textbook is needed, the
Bookstore will order a desk copy for review.
All
desk copies will be purchased at retail by faculty members. At that
time the Bookstore will record the purchase date, title, buyer, and the
retail value of the desk copy.
Returned Within 60
Days - The Bookstore will refund the full purchase price if the
replacement copy is returned within sixty days. The faculty member will
be notified approximately twenty days prior to the return deadline.
Returned
After the 60 Day Period - If the replacement copy of the original desk
copy is returned after the sixty day period, the book may be
repurchased by the Bookstore at one-half of retail, provided the title
will be used in a subsequent term. Desk copies returned after the
deadline will be subject to the existing buy back guidelines applicable
to the student's copies.
